With Marvel Phase 2 officially underway, fans saw a major change in the character of Iron Man, a change that rubbed some fans the wrong way but tells me that they are looking to the future when deciding on these evolutions for their characters. Kevin Feige did a big interview with Entertainment Weekly magazine this week and talked a lot about the changes.

“There are things in [Iron Man 3], in the next Thor movie, and particularly in the next Cap movie that will drastically change the landscape between Avengers and Avengers 2,” Feige said.

For those that saw Iron Man 3, there was the MAJOR change for Tony Stark that took place at the end of the movie. While I can see a lot of the complaints asking why he didn’t do this two movies ago, I can get past that when looking at what this could mean for Stark’s future in the Marvel movies – especially after Phase 2 ends. I see Tony becoming more like his Ultimates counterpart, which would be perfect as Robert Downey Jr. gets older.

What changes for Captain America in Marvel Phase 2 will be a bit different, as he is confronted with The Winter Soldier – a face from his past. That face is Bucky Barnes, and not only will it really throw Cap for a loop, but from the look of it, it also might start to make him re-think being the face of the country, instead of thinking on his own.

“With the greatest generation in World War II, there’s a tendency to reflect on that period and say. ‘Things were black and white back then, and now it’s hard to know who the bad guys are.’ We wanted to play on that a little with Cap being uncomfortable with the way S.H.I.E.L.D., and in particular Nick Fury, operates,” Feige said. Fury certainly rides a line, sort of rides the shadows. He has, I think, lied to every character in every movie, though always for seemingly for the good.”

Finally, there is Thor who, as the trailers indicate, will have to make a great sacrifice in Marvel Phase 2. Will that include losing someone close to him? If that happens, will Thor stop being the smart-ass with a God complex and start to evolve into a more dangerous character? The trailer has already shown Thor ask Loki for help, but threaten to kill him if he refuses. As fans of the comic know, if Thor kills his brother he will be banished from Asgard and possibly lose his hammer once again.

This will be an exciting two years as we prepare for the arrival of The Avengers 2, and if Iron Man 3 is any indication, things are just getting started in Marvel Phase 2.
