Several months ago, the cinematic interwebs went crazy over the announcement of Dan Trachtenberg signing on to tackle Y:The Last Man. This was a profound achievement not just for Trachtenberg, but for us film geeks as well. Trachtenberg used to be the host of The  Totally Rad Show where he would  have guest join in and geek out about films on the regular. Basically, this guy is one of us. Then a crazy thing happened. Dan Trachtenberg released two insanely well crafted short films and then his career took off. Now, he is the commander-in-chief for Y: The Last Man.

Ever since, it’s been quiet on the development of the film adaptation of the comic book. Now, producer David Goyer has finally offered an update on the status of the film.

While doing interviews for Man of Steel, David Goyer had this to say about the project:

We’ve got a script that’s as close as it’s ever been, so knock on wood. That could go into production next year… The first movie is meant to function as a standalone, but hopefully continue. Hopefully there will be others.

I’m really excited to see what Trachtenberg can do with his first major film and wish him the best of luck while heading into production. Check out his short film based on the Portal video game below!

Here is a story description of Y: The Last Man from Amazon:

Written by Brian K. Vaughan (LOST, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD, EX MACHINA) and with art by Pia Guerra, this is the saga of Yorick Brown—the only human survivor of a planet-wide plague that instantly kills every mammal possessing a Y chromosome. Accompanied by a mysterious government agent, a brilliant young geneticist and his pet monkey, Ampersand, Yorick travels the world in search of his lost love and the answer to why he’s the last man on earth.
