Man of Steel is about to hit theaters and Zack Snyder said in a recent interview that he had one goal with making this new Superman movie. He said that he just wanted to make Superman cool in the new movie. That goal might be easier said than done.
“We tried to make him more modern but it’s hard to talk about him that way, in those terms,” Snyder told Breakfast Television. “Everyone asks ‘Oh, did you make him more modern’ but what does that mean? We just tried to make him cool.”
Superman has never been cool. He has always been the comic book world’s greatest superhero. He is the one who started it all, and his purity and goodness is what all heroes strive for. However, Batman is dark and street and very cool. Wolverine is down and dirty and very cool. Iron Man is a playboy and very cool. The only superhero less cool than Superman is Captain America.
That is not to say that Superman has not been in some very cool stories. Superman was a classic and Superman II was one of the best superheroes of all-time for many years. In the comics, stories like What Ever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow and his team-up with Batman in Public Enemies were fantastic.
But, as a hero, Superman is a Big Blue Boy Scout who believes in Truth, Justice and the American Way. He is as pure as Apple Pie, but he is not cool. Zack Snyder hopes to change that.
Only in that it’s a modern way in looking at the characters. Everyone’s used to Superman in a way, maybe in your mind you say, ‘I know exactly what Superman is.’ We were able to say [with Man of Steel], what about this way of looking at him?
What do you think? Can Zack Snyder make Superman cool in Man of Steel?
