Last Summer was a bit stale due to studios fearing the cannibalism of major hits like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises. This Summer Movies 2013 are a completely different ball game. There is so much potential spread throughout the season to make for at  least two great possible films a month. Needless to say, I am looking forward to the 2013 box-office battle!

Here is my top 5 Summer Movies 2013:

5. Iron Man 3- May 3rd

Summer Movies 2013

Even though Iron Man 2 was somewhat a disappointment, Robert Downey Jr. elevates every entry with insane charisma. Now that Shane Black has taken over for part 3, my excitement has shot through the roof. Not only is the guy a fantastic writer, he has proven himself a skillful director as well with 2005’s,  Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. It appears all the stakes have been raised for this entry. The villain is one of the most famous from the Iron Man archive and Ben Kingsley just looks badass as The Mandarin. Just hearing his voice alone gave me chills. It’s not my number one anticipated film of the Summer season but this is most likely going to end up as the highest grossing event of the year.

4. Man of Steel- June 14th

Summer Movies 2013

Fellow writer Jesse Blume has heard me stress this many times over the years, but the fact is, I’m not a huge fan of Superman. It’s always been tough for me to get behind a character who is completely flawless or unrelatable. Then, I saw the teaser trailer for Man of Steel and immediately got goosebumps. There is something incredibly spiritual about the advertising of the film. Nolan and Goyer appear to be heading for a story about the creation of a God. Remember that song, what if God was one of us? With Christopher Nolan’s amazing sense for story telling and Zack Snyder’s slick style, this is sure to be a huge surprise for the Summer.

3. The Great Gatsby- May 10th

Summer Movies 2013

The Great Gatsby is a classic American tale even without all the added ingredients this film has going for it. The cinematography looks pristine and the performances from the leads look outstanding. Plus, the last time Baz Luhrman and Leo Dicaprio worked together was on 1996’s Romeo + Juliet. Seeing these two reunite on the big screen after so long is reason enough for me. It’s not an explosive box office blockbuster like the rest, but this is definitely a powerful contender for this year.

2. Pacific Rim- July 12th

Summer Movies 2013

Just tell me there is a Guillermo Del Toro film about to be unleashed and bet your ass I”ll be there opening day. One thing I’ve heard several times about the development of this specific project is the production team wanted to get the story right. Yes there is humongous monsters destroying shit and giant robots placing foot to monster ass, but everyone keeps preaching about a dynamic story involved with the spectacle. Del Toro is a masterful story-teller and I cannot wait to see what this  guy has conjured up. Plus this is Charlie Hunnam’s first major gig outside the television show Sons of Anarchy. It’s going to be interesting to see if this guy can carry his own major movie. Let the robots versus monsters extravaganza begin!

1. Elysium- August 9th

Summer Movies 2013

While everyone is going apeshit over films like Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness, a giant mystical creature lurks beneath the Summer waters waiting to be discovered. What is the creature known as Elysium? Well, my fellow Renegades, Elysium is the second feature-length science fiction effort of Neil Blomkamp, who also directed the 2009 hit, District 9. Most people are completely ignorant of its existence, but I have a feeling as soon as the first trailer hits the web, we’re all going to be knocked on our asses. Here is a synopsis of the film:

“In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth,” the synopsis reads. “Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.”

I cannot wait!!
