It looks like there will be a Pacific Rim reunion on the upcoming King Arthur movie. Guy Ritchie is looking at adding Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam to the already signed Idris Elba in his King Arthur casting along with the possibility of Elizabeth Olsen joining the cast as well.
Idris Elba, who will play a Merlin styled character who mentors Arthur, starred in Pacific Rim as the commanding officer serving over Hunnam’s pilot. Now, Deadline reports that he will likely mentor him once again.
Guy Ritchie, who brought Sherlock Holmes back to popularity long before Benedict Cumberbatch made him cool, hopes to do the same for King Arthur. Sure, there are a lot of King Arthur movies out there, some better than others, I have faith in Guy Ritchie.
Guy Ritchie developed a King Arthur movie in 2010 but the project died when a competing King Arthur film started to heat up. Now that the competing film project is also dead, Ritchie is back again and rumors have it that he is positioning the movie as the start of a franchise.
With Charlie Hunnam as King Arthur, Idris Elba as Merlin and Elizabeth Olsen as Guinevere, this could be a really good movie. The early word is that the movie will be more of a fantasy re-telling than the other popular adaptations of the legend. It will be curious to see who they get to play Lancelot.
Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur movie will hit theaters on July 22, 2016.
