GSP has joined the cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. After the news that Robert Redford was in talks to join the franchise, I didn’t think anything would take me by surprise. This did.

Georges St-Pierre, easily one of the best UFC fighters in the history of mixed martial arts fighting, will portray Batroc the Leaper. What is hilarious about this casting is the character’s name in the comics is Georges Batroc. Is it just a coincidence that they share the same first name? I think not.

Batroc was a hired gun, selling his services to the highest bidder. One of those bidders in the comics was HYDRA, the organization that Red Skull led in Captain America: The First Avenger. While he is a lone assassin at times, he also employs lackeys to help him, but in the comics, he has always been an enemy of Captain America. The most interesting thing about Batroc is that, even as a villain, he is an honorable man who has a code of ethics – the Way of the Warrior.

After The Death of Captain America, Batroc was among those tearfully paying respect to the man that he considered a “brother warrior.” With his honor and that last bit of trivia, it once again brings to memory the casting of Frank Grillo as Crossbones, the man who killed Captain America in that story line.

Anyway, the addition of GSP to the cast is really fun for UFC fans, and it will be interesting to see what the champ can pull off in the role.
