Though it has yet to be officially green-lit, Guillermo del Toro is already hard at work writing the Pacific Rim sequel to the completely awesome robot vs. monsters movie.  Although, according to actor Max Martini (some of you might remember him as Herc Hansen in Pacific Rim) the would-be Pacific Rim sequel might actually be a prequel instead.

I feel I should note up front that this appears to be mostly speculation on the part of Martini since he himself says “I don’t know if it’s a prequel or a sequel.”  Nonetheless, I think the series would be better off if this next movie wasn’t a prequel.  I could probably count on one hand the number of times a movie prequel ever ended up being a good idea (at least artistically).  Even when they do succeed they’re usually considered a significant step down from their predecessor.  Not even Pixar or Lord of the Rings has been immune from this.

Of course the bigger issue to focus on at this point is whether or not a Pacific Rim sequel will even be made at all.  The first film was incredibly expensive to produce (reported budget of $190 million) and I don’t see a sequel getting any cheaper (or at least not a good one).  Even with a worldwide gross of over $400 million, most have called it a marginal hit at best.  As much as I really want a sequel to happen, I know the studios will likely need a lot of convincing to make it happen.

Do you think a Pacific Rim sequel will get made?  Do you think it should be a prequel or a sequel?  Let us know what you think in the comment section below.
