Slashfilm reported yesterday that the long-running animated show The Simpsons is going to kill off a major character for their 25th season.  So far, the producers have been secretive as to which character will get the axe.  However executive producer Al Jean hinted that “the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won’t say who it is.”

While this does narrow it down considerably from the literal cast of hundreds, that still leaves fifteen eligible candidates to meet the old Grim Reaper.   The shows Emmy winning characters are Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Mrs. Krabappel, Apu, Sideshow Bob, Grandpa Simpson, Moe, Barney, Duffman, Krusty the Clown, Carl, Chief Wiggum, and Comic Book Guy.

Though I seriously doubt anybody from the Simpson household will die, I can easily see most of the others characters perishing since many of them have already met with more than their fair share of near death experiences.  For example, Krusty and Sideshow Bob have both faked their own deaths in the past, Apu’s store seems to get robbed on almost a daily basis, Comic Book Guy has already had a heart attack, and Moe has attempted suicide on multiple occasions.  Personally, I think it’s going to be Grandpa Simpson, since he is easily the oldest of all these characters and over the last few years has mostly existed to tell rambling stories.

The timing of this seems a little odd to me since Family Guy announced just a couple of months ago their plans to kill off a member of the Griffin family this season.  This is probably just a coincidence but like I said the timing feels odd.

Of course, this hasn’t been the first time The Simpsons have killed off an important character.  The most famous example is in the Season 11 episode “Alone Again Natura-Diddily where the Simpsons neighbors Maude Flanders dies in a freak accident caused by Homer.

So who do you think will be the character to die?  What impact do you think it will have on the show?  Be sure to give your two cents in the comments below
