So this is some interesting news. Jack Black is apparently in negotiations with Sony Pictures to star in their upcoming adaptation of R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps. The series holds a place near and dear to my heart. I grew up reading those books and even wrote a few amateur attempts when I was a kid. If all goes according to plan, Black will play a spooky author, a surrogate for Stine himself. Goosebumps will be a reunion for Jack Black with his former director Rob Letterman. Letterman and Black worked together on Gulliver’s Travels and Shark Tale. I didn’t like either of those movies very much, but I’m pretty excited about this.

Black’s author will be plagued by monsters come to life from the pages of his own writing. This set up seems perfectly suited for his boundless energy and trademark hysterics. I’m envisioning Jack Black curled up in a closet; whimpering, while a monster with green skin and so many eyes searches for him. The prospect of Jack Black’s face when he first sees one of his creatures turn on him puts this film on my list of things to follow.

After a turn towards the more adult, with his Tenacious D work as well as Bernie, it’s nice to see Black return to family film. The elegant goofiness that has defined Jack Black’s career taps into an oddball form of comedy that is great for children and adults alike. I’m ready to see him get back to that. Bernie was fantastic, but I love Jack Black with his full power and it seems like that’s exactly what Goosebumps is looking for. Is this good news? Are you excited? Let’s talk below!
