So, that was the Death of Superman Lives trailer for the upcoming documentary.
Back in 1998, Warner Brothers was very close to releasing a new Superman film. It would have been entitled Superman Lives, directed by Tim Burton, written by Kevin Smith, and starring none other than Nicolas Cage of all people as Superman. The film would have featured Brainiac and Lex Luthor as the film’s villains, along with Doomsday in one scene. . Despite all the time and investment put into this project, it fell apart during production. Other than Kevin Smith’s epic story about the extremely unusual project, only a few photographs and sketches of concept art remain.
Until now. Sometime ago, director Jon Schnepp decided to produce a documentary about the Superman movie that never was, and took to Kickstarter to raise the funds necessary to do so. The fund-raising period ended back in March after raising over $115,000. The film intends to speak to all of the key players of the project and find out how and why it fell apart.
The documentary will be entitled “Death of Superman Lives’: What Happened?” and the Death of Superman Lives trailer has now arrived online.
I’ve always been fascinated by this immensely strange story, ever since I heard Smitty’s account of it online. I’ve read his script, and it’s actually not that bad. However, it sounded like Burton wouldn’t have used it at all, and I’m sure that the film would have been dreadful. That being said, this new documentary is sure to be an interesting look into the bizarre project.

The giant spider thing is hilarious. Jon Peters is a monolithic moron of a studio exec if there ever was one.
