If there are two comic book properties I would like to see turned into television series, it would be Preacher and 100 Bullets. Both would need to be on a network like HBO or Showtime, and both would be amazing to watch play out in the long form. However, Preacher is one property that had a chance at HBO but now looks like it will just get a solo Preacher movie instead.
That isn’t a great idea, because too much happens here for just one movie to contain, and the property is not big enough to sell to a studio as a trilogy. That isn’t stopping D.J. Caruso from trying to get it made anyway. In a recent interview, the director of Eagle Eye said that he still holds the rights to the property, but getting it made is a tough sell.
“I’m still attached to Preacher and we’re wrestling with Sony because I got another movie at Sony called Invertigo, which is a big action film we’re trying to get going this summer,” Caruso said. “So Preacher got put on the back burner, but we’re still involved with Preacher and hopefully we’ll have some good news on that soon. John August wrote a great script. I think it’s one of those features that has to kind of go through the studio system if it’s going to be made for a certain price. So we’re kind of revisiting a way to approach making the movie in the right way.
As much as I want to see Preacher adapted, much like Dark Tower, making it as just one solitary Preacher movie isn’t going to cut it. If they can’t do it right, maybe it should just remain a project that “should have been.” Of course, since this is all about the money, quality really doesn’t matter here anyway, now does it?
