John C. Reilly is cast in the upcoming Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy. Who he is set to play remains a mystery, as he has been signed to a multi-picture deal. With Guardians of the Galaxy (A) a standalone movie and (B) taking place in a different timeline, that makes little sense. There are two ideas of who Reilly is playing, depending on who you believe.

Deadline reported that Reilly is playing Rhomann Dey, the man who leads the Nova Corps. For those who don’t know, the Nova Corps is intergalactic cops, sort of like the Green Lantern Corps in DC Comics. Richard Ryder is the most famous Nova Corps member (known on earth as Nova), and received his position thanks to Rhomann. There is also a new Nova on earth, a younger child, and some people (basically me) hinted that he could be the kid from Iron Man 3 in the end.

However, Deadline also reported last month that Glenn Close will play the leader of the Nova Corps, meaning that one website has given two distinctively different answers to the same question.

John C. Reilly playing the head of the Nova Corps could easily tie in with the multi-picture deal, as the Nova Corps could easily tie into the Avengers battle with Thanos, whenever that happens (Avengers 3 maybe?). However, Glenn Close playing the head of the Nova Corps could also play into that well, as Hitfix has suggested that Reilly is actually playing a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who deals as the go-between dealing with extraterrestrial affairs, kind of like Agent Coulson for alien affairs.

This could make more sense than him playing the head of the Nova Corps, as he could then appear in Thor’s movies as well as anything else that takes place off of earth, including dealing with The Avengers if Thanos heads our way.
