Phase 2 of the Marvel universe has fast-tracked heavily since The Avengers rocked audiences last May.

As a plan for the next stage, Marvel greenlit Guardians of the Galaxy as part of a new universe that would take the comic properties into the cosmos.

Director James Gunn (Slither, Super), has been hard at work trying to find his “Star-Lord” since he was hired by the studio to bring the film to life. After long last, Guardians of the Galaxy has signed its leading man.

Chris Pratt

Deadline reports that Chris Pratt (Moneyball, Zero Dark Thirty) has signed on to take on the lead role of Peter Quill “Star Lord.”

Pratt has slowly gained a reputation in entertainment handling both drama roles as well as comedic. Pratt most recently starred as one of the SEAL Team Six soldiers in the critically acclaimed Zero Dark Thirty.

He has also shown tremendous range in comedic roles with The Five-Year Engagement and the television program Parks and Recreation. His style of acting is definitely a perfect match for James Gunn.

Here is a brief summary of the character provided by TheMarySue.com

Peter was emotionally scarred at a pretty young age; his father tried to commit infanticide against him, and when he failed left baby Peter staring up into the night sky. This led him to a life of lonership and a deep passion for everything science-fiction and NASA. He devotes himself to intense study after his mother is killed, and is later assigned to Eve, NASA’s first permanently manned space station. An alien entity calles Masters of the Universe visit the station and offer the title of Star-Lord to a worthy candidate; Peter is rejected. After a brief sabbatical back on Earth, he returns and takes the title. Master strategist, problem solver, and expert in close-quarter combat, Star-Lord has extensive knowledge of alien customs and culture. He also has an “Element Gun,” which is a meta-pistol that can project one of the four elements (air, water, fire, earth).

This was a surprising casting move since Pratt’s name was never mentioned on any of the short-lists. However, he is an extremely fresh talent that has shown diversity in all of his performances.

I’m actually glad to see this guy land such a major role. Guardians of the Galaxy is currently scheduled for August 1, 2014!
