Fox introduced Colossus into the X-Men movie universe in X2, arguably the best movie of the original trilogy. In that movie, Daniel Cudmore played the Russian mutant, but had a very small role in the movie as he saved kids from Stryker’s attack force. He also appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
However, the next time fans see Colossus on the big-screen, it will be in Deadpool, which hits theaters in February 2016. It will also be a different actor and a different look. The X-Men movies had Colossus as the steel-skinned warrior, but he was pretty much the same size at the other X-Men.
Tim Miller wanted his Colossus to be more like the comics and tower over other people. Because of that, Entertainment Weekly reported that Cudmore is out and Russian big-man Stefan Kapicic is in. Seeing the actor in the Deadpool trailer shows that he really looks like the big Mutant and Kapicic said that he is more like Piotr Rasputin in character as well.
“Tim Miller’s idea of Colossus was to be bigger and stronger than everyone else, so for the motion capture they needed an extremely tall man,” said Kapicic. “I’m 6-foot-4, but he wanted Colossus to be over 7 feet, so they used a stunt double to recreate his height, and he did very good job there. Tim also wanted Colossus to sound as close as possible to the comic book character’s background, so he had me to come in, since my voice was what he envisioned for Colossus, who has an authentic Russian accent. My character’s voice gives him the past history as Piotr Rasputin once you hear him speak. This made him the most authentic to the original idea of the comic book character.”
Luckily, Kapicic admitted to being a comic book geek and loves Deadpool, who he calls the perfect antihero. Check out the Deadpool trailer with Colossus in it and check back tomorrow when the new Deadpool trailer hits.
