There have been two big screen Hulk movies in the last 15 years. The first came from Universal with Ang Lee’s Hulk, a movie that had a lot of problems but might be the one comic book movie that most resembled watching an actual comic book. The second came with the new Marvel Expanded Universe, but still from Universal, and was full-on action, a complaint coming from the character development in the first movie.

According to a Yahoo interview with Mark Ruffalo, the third different actor since Ang Lee’s movie to play The Hulk, the reason that a third Hulk movie isn’t coming is because Marvel and Universal are not getting along together.

When asked about Marvel regaining power of a Hulk movie, like they did with Sony and a Spider-Man movie, Ruffalo said

“I think they’ve been working on it. Marvel and Universal famously don’t get along very well, and so that’s working against us, definitely. But I know for a fact that everyone is holding out hope that one day we can do it. But the nature of the relationship right now, it’s a little prohibitive. And I hope that that changes, that changes with regimes, it changes over the course of time. But right now it doesn’t look particularly promising.”

Ruffalo also said that it might take a regime change, such as the one that recently happened at Sony, to ease the tension between Marvel/Disney and Universal/Comcast.

However, fans will still see The Hulk, who appeared in both Avengers movies as well as the post-credits of Iron Man 3.  He will next appear in Thor: Ragnarok, after missing out on Captain America: Civil War. The third Thor movie starts shooting in June 2016.
