As if the summer of 2015 wasn’t already “action-packed” to begin with, Warner Brothers has decided to add one more film to the pile. The studio has announced that their Joe Wright directed Peter Pan origin movie Pan will be released June 26, 2015. The Joe Wright Pan film is still in the casting stages, though Javier Bardem is currently attached to play Blackbeard.
I really have to question Warner Bros. logic on this move. It was already bad enough that they decide to release Pan in a season that’s becoming more crowded by the day but the date itself has me scratching my head as well. If Pan is supposed to be an family-friendly movie, they will have to compete with Pixar’s Inside Out (June 19th) and the Despicable Me spin-off Minions (July 10th). If they’re aiming for something more action oriented then they’ll have to butt heads with Jurassic World (June 12th), The Fantastic Four (June 19th), and the Terminator reboot (July 1st). So really no matter what direction they take with Pan, they’re almost guaranteed to step on a box-office landmine.
Even worse is that Pan is said to “darker” and “grittier”, two words that I’ve become increasingly tired of hearing over the years, especially when it comes to studios remaking my childhood memories. Just because it worked for Batman doesn’t mean it’ll work for everything else.
