More positive news out of the blockbuster movie universe. In a recent interview Natalie Portman seemed to indicate that a Marvel female superhero movie is coming!
“There are definitely many strong women, but it will be exciting when there is a central female character which I think is coming – I have heard is coming – and, of course, also a central non-white character will also be exciting. Title characters.”
Portman’s outlook is seriously encouraging and totally true. The comics are littered with great Marvel female superhero characters (and some less than great ones, but they don’t need to lead movies). I for one would love to see Ms. Marvel, Monica Rambeau, or even Sersi be the title character in a new film.
Marvel has also done a pretty supplying powerful supporting roles for women, a fact that Portman was very excited about.
“But they do definitely have strong female characters in them, and I think it’s a testament to the people who run Marvel, their respect, their just normal human respect for women, the way they want to characterize them; you can tell when men talk to you, as just a person or as a ‘woman.'”
This is all awesome, and speaks well of the people at Marvel, even if it’s a little bit of a better late than never situation.

On the other hand, we have Stan Lee. Ever since he appeared in Spiderman, in that most annoying cameo of all time, I’ve had a bit of a problem with the man.
My distaste for him probably stretches back even further, given my firm entrenchment 0n #TeamKirby, but that cameo sealed the deal that Stan Lee is a self obsessed dingo-dangus.
Now it turns out he’s also a calculative, misogynist jerk too. In response to questions about a Marvel female superhero lead in the movie universe Lee had this to say:
“[w]ell, probably at one time, they’ll make a movie of the Black Widow. I’m sure of it. But you see, the thing is, the women like these movies as much as the guys. So we don’t have to knock ourselves out to find a female. But we will.”
There is no winning with this guy! Earlier in the comic book movie era the logic was that the movies were for men. Now that women like them too, who needs a Marvel female superhero lead? This is insane! It seems like the world is trending away from Stan Lee’s horrible, backwards brain, but I’d like to see people in his position avoid putting their foot so deep in their mouth that it tickles the uvula.
