There have been a lot of Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies. There was the awesome first one, there was the second one with Dennis Hopper that I actually watched in a university class that studied violence in cinema, there was the crappy one with Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey, and there were the Platinum Dunes remakes. Finally, there was Texas Chainsaw 3D last year which got consensus bad reviews.
Well, Hollywood isn’t done with Leatherface yet. Lionsgate is ignoring the bad reviews and are setting out to make a sequel to the 2013 movie. The studio is already working with a writer on the movie and Bloody Disgusting reported that the movie will focus on a teenage Leatherface, which makes is a prequel to the franchise.
This just continues the trend of Hollywood to remake some of the best horror classics in cinema history. Not only has Texas Chainsaw Massacre been rebooted, but so has Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Amityville Horror, Halloween, The Omen, Rosemary’s Baby, and many more. It seems that Hollywood is just hoping one of these movies will hit it big based on nostalgia.
With the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, it looks like Hollywood is hoping that they can follow in the footsteps of television, which has seen horror prequels based on Hannibal Lector and Norman Bates knock it out of the park. The difference is that those TV shows were very smartly written and produced, something that most of the movie reboots have not accomplished.
