A casting call sheet makes it sound like the Edgar Wright directed Ant-Man movie might not be about Hank Pym at all.
Of course, this should come as no surprise to Renegade Cinema readers. Back in October D-Rock reported that the Ant-Man movie would be a heist film. Add in my story from August about Hank not creating Ultron, and both Pym and Scott Lang being part of the movie, and the pieces began to fall together.
This Ant-Man movie isn’t going to be about angry, schizophrenic, Hank Pym as Ant-Man. This is going to be about Scott Lang stealing Pym’s Ant-Man suit and Pym Particles in order to save his daughter. And ignore those angry message board fans – this is a good thing.
Here is what the leaked Ant-Man casting call looks like:
- [Young Girl] Submit ages 6-9, intelligent, appealing
- [Male] 30s, Asian, Huge, tough and intimidating, comedic ability
- [Male] 30s, Caucasian, over 6′, dangerous and rough, comedic
- [Male] 50s, Italian-American, scary and unusual features, deadpan humour
- [Male] 30s – 40s, Russian, wiry and smart, deadpan humour
- [Male] 20s or 30s, under 5’8″, edgy and funny
Marvel wants to make their movies and comic books line up, and that includes changing how the characters look in the comics to match the movies. In the comics, Hank Pym has not been a costumed hero in a long time, instead working as a scientist and helping behind the scene.
In the comics, Lang is Ant-Man. Here is Lang’s story:
Scott Lang was a thief who got out of prison and was trying to go straight when his young daughter Cassie became ill and was dying. Lang finally broke into Hank Pym’s lab and stole the Ant-Man suit and the Pym Particles. He did this to use them to rescue a doctor who could save his daughter’s life. After the fact, Pym allowed him to keep the suit and particles and become a hero.
The six to nine year old girl in the casting call? Cassie.
The male in his 20s? Scott Lang
The man in his 30s? Hank Pym
It would be the perfect set up for a movie but fans will still complain that it is not Hank Pym. It is why Shane Black and Edgar Wright should steer clear of comic book movies. No one wants to see a good filmmaker make an original story in these movies – they just want cookie cutter adaptations that are copy and pasted from the comics.
And, I will never agree with those fans.
