I’m sure a lot of you know that a World of Warcraft movie has been gestating in Hollywood for some time now. If I recall correctly, names like Sam Raimi were bandied about back in the day to take on an adaptation of what is arguably the most popular MMO ever created. I played it a few times myself although I never really got too far into the game, but I think that’s mostly due to the fact that I was in grad school and didn’t have a lot of time to dedicate to raids…still, I enjoyed the time I spent in the playground that Blizzard built (Wrath of the Lich King at the time) and can certainly recognize the potential in bringing the WoW world to the big screen. In my opinion though, it might’ve been better to have struck when the iron was hotter as WoW subscriptions have been on the decline…however, firm news of the adaptation finally moving forward may help spurn those lagging sales.
Legendary Pictures released the teaser trailer for Duncan Jones’ World of Warcraft Saturday morning at Comic-Con. Yes, Duncan Jones, the man behind the superb film Moon and its not-as-good but still great cousin, Source Code. The director will begin shooting next year and seems extremely optimistic about the film’s chances, stating that it is a “dream come true” to be able to work on it. While the trailer is not currently available online, it did cause a buzz with the footage looking a bit like a Western with video game elements mixed in. Barren landscapes, large swords, a giant green monster (probably an orc) and man charging towards each other to do battle, the man defending a blow from a hammer with a large shield just acquired in a previous skirmish. Sounds quite a bit like a romp around the WoW online mountainside, doesn’t it? Some other atmospheric elements like the repetitive clanging of a “trap of some sort” coupled with battle upon an empty landscape further sold the Western tone.
Be sure to check back when trailer footage shows up online for a more detailed look!
