It’s astounding how quickly people will sell out — case in point: Kickstarter. The Kickstarter founders wrote a post defending the controversial use of Kickstarter by well known celebrities and creators like Zach Braff and Veronica Mars architect Rob Thomas.
“The Veronica Mars and Zach Braff projects have brought tens of thousands of new people to Kickstarter,” the statement… uh, states. “63 percent of those people had never backed a project before,” the founders desperately spin. “Thousands of them have since gone on to back other projects, with more than $400,000 pledged to 2,200 projects so far.”
Cool, you hear that Kickstarter users? Those big celebrities aren’t diverting potential donations from you, they’re supplying the website with traffic. Why would the fKickstarter founders spin this? They don’t have any monetary investment in people contributing millions to well known celebrities’ Kickstarters do they? Oh wait.
The people not getting noticed on Kickstarter will continue to not get noticed — and celebrities will continue to get money for vanity projects for free. So now Kickstarters can look forward to potentially catching run-off money from Zach Braff and Veronica Mars, way to give power to the powerless, Kickstarter.
