With Iron Man 3 vastly approaching, and Phase 2 of Marvel preparing for launch, it appears we’re about to lose major pieces to the overall puzzle. Sadly, the prospect of actors leaving is definitely an outcome that was always inevitable. Committing to a franchise this large for so long would be a struggle for any actor. Still, can just anyone replace Robert Downey Jr. or Gwyneth Paltrow?
In a recent interview, Paltrow opens up about the new Iron Man film and her future involvement. In the discussion, she discusses her and RDJ’s contractual specifics with Marvel. “When they signed us, they signed us for three. So that’s it for the moment, but you never know,” explains Paltrow. When questioned about whether she would like to return as Pepper Potts she says, “I think it depends. It depends on Robert. I don’t think they’re going to make a Pepper Potts movie, so it depends on Iron Man and Robert. I’d be open to more Pepper because I love working with Robert and it’s a great franchise.” She further adds, “Most of the time I’m a full-time mother so it’s nice for me to once in a while go and work on a big hit movie with great actors and then go back to North London and resume playdates and stuff like that! I’m always happy when there’s an opportunity to do it.”
Now, whether or not she means the Avengers or Iron Man was partially revealed today over at Bleeding Cool. The boys over at that site asked whether another Iron Man film was possible at all, to which she replied “I don’t think there’s going to be [an Iron Man 4]. I think we’re done with Iron Man.” If you notice though, what she doesn’t mention is Avengers 2.
I think one key takeaway from all this Marvel business is there is a major side effect when attempting major universe movies like this. Marvel completely changed the game and delivered an expansive character universe like never before but the fact is these are career working actors with business contracts. Another words, nothing last forever, especially in Hollywood. Here is hoping this does not have any adverse effects on Phase 3 plans.
