There is a new king on the top of the weekend box office reports. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes destroyed all competition, knocking Transformers Age of Extinction from the top spot and actually making more than the rest of the Top 10 movies added together.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, aided by solid word of mouth and amazing critical reviews, made $73 million in its opening weekend. Transformers Age of Extinction moved down to second place with a 55.5% drop to make $16.5 million, pushing it over the $200 million mark.

Most of the rest of the Top 10 stayed the same, with the only other new addition being Begin Again, which expanded slightly and made a nice $2.9 million in limited locations.

Not yet making the Top 10 is Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, which opened at five theaters and made $359,000. While those numbers look low, that is the most money per theater of any movie this year outside of The Grand Budapest Hotel. Expect it to get a wider release and eventually move into the Top 10 as word of mouth spreads.
