For a while now, a rumor has been circulating that Marvel has been working on a Hulk solo film based on the popular Planet Hulk storyline. Joss Whedon himself was quick to debunk this bit of news but fans have remained hopeful. Now Mark Ruffalo has expressed his doubts that Marvel would make the film (at least not yet).
When asked about the Planet Hulk he said “Planet Hulk? I don’t think that’s the way to go yet. I think you need more Banner. The whole thing is just him as Hulk, on a planet, fighting other gladitors.” As a matter of fact, while he has acknowledged Marvel is considering another solo film for the character, they haven’t settled on an idea of what that would be. While Ruffalo isn’t too likely to be intimately familiar with Marvel’s production plans he did raise some interesting points.
For starters, when it comes to their movies, Marvel has a track record of using the “less is more” approach, especially when it comes to the Hulk and the studio doesn’t show any signs they’re going to change that. It also wouldn’t make much sense for Marvel to use up part of Ruffalo’s contract on a film he would hardly be in anyway. Not to mention a Planet Hulk film would likely be pretty expensive. Between the effects needed for an almost entire film with the Hulk and the elaborate costumes and CGI needed for the other characters, if this would-be film isn’t executed right it could be a disaster of John Carter proportions.
