While Divergent has been a big enough hit at the box office to warrant a sequel, it may have some unintended side effects for another major film franchise.  Shailene Woodley is reportedly unsure as to whether or not she will play Mary Jane Watson in Amazing Spider-Man 3 as originally expected thanks in no small part to the success of Divergent.

Woodley had been originally cast to play Mary Jane Watson back in 2012 for Amazing Spider-Man 2 before director Marc Webb decided to cut her part from the film and rumors that the role would be recast for Amazing Spider-Man 3 have persisted ever since.

In a recent interview with Total Film, she claimed to not know what her status is for Amazing Spider-Man 3 and by her own admission might not want to do the role anyway.  “I don’t even know that I would want to do two franchises at this point,” she said.

It doesn’t seem like Woodley will be returning to the Amazing Spider-Man franchise and given her apparent lack of enthusiasm about the possibility of acting in two franchises at the same time, it’s probably for the best.  It may end up being a moot point anyway given that it’s not uncommon for movies of this magnitude to be shooting at the same time.  Since Woodley’s part in Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been cut out it would probably just be simpler to hire a new actress for the sequel anyway.

Do you think Shailene Woodley should be in Amazing Spider-Man 3?  Is Sony better off casting a different actress to play Mary Jane Watson?  Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
