Quentin Tarantino is in the news right now because he has chosen to cancel the production of his next movie – The Hateful Eight. While he said just a few weeks ago that he was excited about shooting another western, he now refuses to make the movie because he feels one of his actors betrayed him.

Tarantino sent out copies of the first draft of The Hateful Eight for people involved with the movie to read. One of those people let the copy of the script leak and, according to Tarantino, it has leaked all over Hollywood. Because of this betrayal, Tarantino has said he won’t make the movie.

“I finished a script, a first draft, and I didn’t mean to shoot it until next winter, a year from now. I gave it to six people, and apparently it’s gotten out today,” Tarantino said. “I’m going to publish it, and that’s it for now. I give it out to six people and if I can’t trust them to that degree, then I have no desire to make it. I’ll publish it. I’m done.”

Tarantino said that he gave the script to Reggie Hudlin, one of the producers of Django Unchained. He said Hudlin betrayed him by inviting an agent over to read it, but that was not who leaked it. He said that he believes it was one of the actors he gave it to, which means Tim Roth, Michael Madsen and Bruce Dern. He said that he knows for a fact that Roth didn’t leak it. That leaves Madsen and Dern.

Madsen has worked with Tarantino on a number of movies, all the way back to his first film Reservoir Dogs. Bruce Dern is the newcomer to the Tarantino world. What Tarantino said happened is that the actor let their agent read it and the agent spread it around Hollywood. Tarantino also said he is pretty sure it came from CAA, which means it was Dern’s agent, although CAA denied it.

It doesn’t seem like Tarantino blames Dern, because he said he still wants to cast Dern in his next movie. Tarantino blames the agent. Tarantino said he doesn’t mind his scripts getting out there for sites to write about, but his problem is an agent sending around a first draft copy of his next movie. He said he will just write it as a book now and then move on to his next movie, which he says there are about 10 ideas for,

“I am not talking out of both sides of my mouth, because I do like the fact that everyone eventually posts it, gets it and reviews it on the net,” Tarantino said. “Frankly, I wouldn’t want it any other way. I like the fact that people like my shit, and that they go out of their way to find it and read it. But I gave it to six motherfucking people! Starting this week, I’ll be setting meetings with publishers.”

Honestly, Tarantino has every right to be pissed. This is a first draft of a script and if that gets in people’s hands, they will start to spread rumors of what the movie is about despite the fact that scripts change through the entire process. To Tarantino, this was just a betrayal from someone he thought he could trust.
