It has been rumored for months now, making it Marvel’s worst kept secret, but Edgar Wright has cast Paul Rudd to plat Ant-Man in his upcoming superhero movie. The Paul Rudd Ant-Man casting was mentioned here back in October when we reported that Rudd was up for Ant-Man and his I Love You Man cast mate Rashida Jones was up for the role of Janet Van Dyne.
The question that has not been answered is whether or not the Paul Rudd Ant-Man character will be that of Hank Pym or Scott Lang.
Now, while many casual Avengers fans feel that it should only be Hank Pym, that is really not what might make the most sense here. Edgar Wright has called this a heist film, and honestly, Scott Lang’s story of stealing the Ant-Man serum from Pym and using it to save his daughter could make a fantastic movie, while Hank Pym’s best traits is his mental illness and paranoia, something that can’t be taken best advantage of in one stand-alone movie.
Of course, Edgar Wright is directing this so I have ZERO fears that this will be anything but a fantastic movie – however, if Shane Black proved anything, it is that comic fans will turn on even the best directors and greatest stories if it is not what they wanted when they walked into the theater. But, honestly, Wright can’t do any wrong, haters be damned.
Ant-Man debuts in theaters July 31, 2015.
