Two years ago I would have scoffed at major reshoots and story changes in an upcoming movie as a warning sign that the movie was likely to suck. We will call that “Pre-World War Z.” That is why the recently announced re-shoots for Mad Max Fury Road don’t have me too worried.
To remind everyone, World War Z was delayed and a brand new ending was shot. Everyone predicted doom and gloom but what resulted was a very fun zombie movie in the vein of 28 Days Later, and also a movie that was very successful at the box office.
While some might question the need for a new Mad Max movie, I am giving it the benefit of the doubt because the original movie’s director – George Miller – is the one helming this new chapter in the saga. Plus, it stars Tom Hardy in the lead role and if you want to replace Mel Gibson, I couldn’t have thought of anyone better.
Why the extra stuff is being filmed is unknown – one source said that it was for an extra action sequence while another said it was never finished last year. Tom Hardy himself said that it was to add more to the story.
“[Mad Max] is great, it’s a big old beast, it’s a behemoth,” Hardy said. “I’m off out there next week to do some reshoots – well, not reshoots, actually, we’re doing more. Building more Mad Max that’s even more spectacular.”
Like I said, World War Z did extensive re-shoots to make the movie better and I really hope that is the case here. I’m really interested in seeing Tom Hardy take on this material.
