Forget about the rumors. Kevin Smith just announced that he has started writing Clerks 3, which is supposed to be his final directorial feature film.

On his Facebook page, Smith posted a photo of the cover page for Clerks 3, dated March 8, and then said he woke up this morning and started writing. Here are his exact words:

THE BEGINNING OF THE END
20 years ago today, we started shooting CLERKS.
20 years later, with no plan or provocation, I jumped out of bed at 4:20 this morning and started writing CLERKS III.
It’s been like hanging out with old friends.
And after 2 hours of tapping the keys and giggling, I have come to a conclusion…
CLERKS III will be the best film I’ll ever make.

Sure, Kevin Smith is the master of hyperbole, and is in fact one of the best carnival barkers in the world today, but I am excited about this.

A lot of online film critics have turned on Smith, and for good reason. He seems to hate the idea of film criticism and doesn’t rank that writing form as high as say, writing a movie script with a poop monster. I am completely opposed to that idea because a good film critic is someone who studies films and puts their knowledge into their writing. Sure, there are people who just want to bash movies without really knowing anything about filmmaking, but Smith threw all critics under the bus with his statements.

A lot of film critics have turned on Kevin Smith, but I am not one of them.

As I said, I don’t agree with him bashing my writing vocation, but I that does not get in the way of my appreciation of his writing. He is one of the best geek writers working today and his writing is what will be missed most when he retires. I really liked Clerks, absolutely loved Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and enjoyed Clerks II as well. Now its time to see Dante andĀ RandalĀ in their 40s, and that is something I am very excited about.
