AMC recently announced that a Walking Dead spinoff series is shuffling down the pipe. It is unclear whether the show, with a targeted release of 2015, will be based on elements from the comic book or introduce entirely new stories. What is confirmed is the presence of the shows current executive producers, including the comic’s creator Robert Kirkman.

Kirkman suggests that the stories will be mostly new when he says, “I couldn’t’ be more thrilled to about getting the chance to create a new corner of the Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

This isn’t quite as definitive as it sounds. With two years of scheduled production, it is quite possible that this Walking Dead spinoff series will draw heavily on the comic book. At this point, it’s anyone’s guess.

You know what that means! Time to speculate! My greatest hope for this Walking Dead spinoff is an attempt to fight back against the zombies and end the plague. Maybe a team of scientists will spend the season struggling in an impenetrable, glass laboratory to create an ultimate anti zombie weapon. Maybe that weapon will be an automated version of The Cranberries with a siren song to lure the zombies deep into the Pacific Ocean.

Failing that, I’d love to see a show about a reformed human society that springs up and attempts to utilize the zombies for cheap labor. They could put some brains at the end of electricity generating treadmills maybe. That show would be especially interesting if told from the perspective of the zombies as they come to terms with their position as dominated subjects. It could be almost as poignant a critique of capitalism as Romero’s early works.

My last idea is about a sleazy lawyer in New Mexico. He rises to post-apocalyptic power by mediating conflicts between survivors and taking a little on the side. They could bring Bob Odekirk back! He’d be perfect! What do you think? Are you excited about the Walking Dead spinoff ? Sick of zombies? Got any good ideas? Let’s talk about it!
