The first Crow movie was a fantastic comic book adaptation, one of the best to ever see the big screen. However, the sequels have run the gambit between decent (Salvation) and wretched (Wicked Prayer). Now, with a Crow reboot underway, fans are starting to doubt it will be any better. With creator James O’Barr coming aboard the Crow reboot, there might be hope yet.
“It is important for ‘Crow’ fans to understand that Relativity, Javier, Luke and the entire team are working on a new adaptation of the book itself,” O’Barr said. “I believe that this movie will stand alongside Brandon [Lee] and his film as a valid work of art, and I look forward to collaborating on the project.”
Of course, the easy example of how something like this can be good is by looking at the Evil Dead remake, which saw creator Sam Raimi working on it from the start. While O’Barr was not in this from the start, hopefully O’Barr can help sway doubting fans who got a glimpse at what the Crow reboot was supposed to look like.
The biggest problem with the sequels is that no one was able to replace what Brandon Lee brought to the role in the first movie. Luke Evans has signed on to star as The Crow in the remake, and that is a nice move. However, the leaked script from a few months ago showed him as a religious cop and really didn’t keep the spirit of the original’s story. With James O’Barr coming aboard, hopefully they can turn out something good.
I don’t want them to re-tell the original story in The Crow reboot, but they need to at least keep the spirit of it. The original remains one of the best movies out there, so even if this new effort fails, we still have that one.
