The weekend box office battles evened out some this week as no one movie reigned supreme and three films battled for the top spot. Despite the great critical reviews and positive word-of-mouth, Edge of Tomorrow was the first big summer blockbuster to burn out this year while The Fault in our Stars was very surprising in its impressive opening weekend take.
The Fault in our Stars, an adaptation of the best selling young adult novel about two teenagers with cancer, took first place for the weekend with an impressive $48.2 million. That was huge for the movie since its production budget was only $12 million. It is guaranteed to be a huge box office success.
On the other hand, the time travel sci-fi movie Edge of Tomorrow was a huge box office flop, finishing third. While most of the summer blockbusters this year hit it big, Edge of Tomorrow fizzled out with a $29.1 million take. With a $178 million budget, this movie will make its budget back thanks to international box office totals hitting $140 million already, but it will end up a domestic failure at the box office.
Malificent dropped 51.7 percent in its second weekend and finished second with $33.5 million to move its two week domestic total to $127.3 million. X-Men: Days of Future Past took fourth with $14.7 million as it closes in on the $200 million mark domestically.
