Tom Hiddleston has become a much more recognizable face in the movie industry since taking the role of the villainous Loki in both the Thor film, and the biggest hit of 2012, The Avengers. Thankfully, he it doesn’t seem that he’s let that fact get to his head. He recently expressed his love for the character to Zap2It. He has every intention of reprising his role as Loki for as long as he can.
“I will go on until the audience wants me to stop or Marvel tells me to stop. It is a rare thing to be connected to a character that people enjoy watching. I never expected it my wildest dreams. You don’t dare sign up for that as an actor. All any actor can see is they might play a character that somehow ignites the public imagination and it is thrilling when you do.”
In the same interview, Hiddleston did actually give a few hints as to what we could see from the character in the sequel to Thor. He didn’t say whether Loki would remain evil, or turn back towards the side of angels with his estranged brother.
“The fun of playing Loki is the character itself constantly keeps people guessing. And he provokes a double-edged sentiment in the people who allegedly he has invested in, and who he cares about. As someone, who was then cast out as the black sheep of the royal family, whether he can be accepted into that fold is a question that remains to be answered. Just how dark and evil he has become is another question I hope the film will answer.”
He certainly hits the nail on the head there. Loki’s ambiguity can turn anybody on their head, which J. Michael Straczynski really played with in his excellent run on Thor a few years ago. While Loki is still an evil villain, he does have a nobler side that remains unseen more often than not. I’m sure that for the sequel, they’ll have to play with the idea that Loki is less of a bad guy in order for both him and Thor to unite against the villains. That’s just one of the basic tropes of superhero sequels.
What do you think about Tom Hiddleston’s comments and commitment to the role? Do you like that he is so invested with the character? Why don’t you just tell us what you think in the comments below?
