It seems like for every Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games, there is a Percy Jackson, I am Number Four and Mortal Instruments. While some young adult adaptations are incredibly big draws, others seems to leave their fanbase at home. The Mortal Instruments sequel might be dead as a result.
The Mortal Instruments has a HUGE fanbase in the young adult book world, with both sequels and prequels in literary format for the offering. However, for whatever reason, the fans of Cassandra Clare’s books chose not to support it when The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones hit theaters.
Now, the proposed sequel, The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes, might be the casualty. Because the movie only made $37 million, a good $23 million under its actual budget, there is no real reason for the studio to pump more money into the film.
It looks like the City in Ashes of the title might refer to the Mortal Instruments sequel itself.
However, there is reason to be slightly optimistic for fans of the novels. Percy Jackson looked dead in the water as well after Lightning Thief flamed out at the box office, and it came back with a sequel anyway earlier this year. If fans can prove they care enough to buy the DVD, maybe the Mortal Instruments sequel can find life and rise from the ashes as well.
