Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is having one of the best years of his career. Along with returning to the wrestling world and becoming the WWE Champion for the first time in ten years, he has headlined several films. Snitch, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and Pain & Gain, have all debuted earlier this year and Fast & Furious 6 and Empire State will arrive later in the year.

The Rock Marvel RumorsNow it seems that Johnson is interested in adding a comic book character to his resume. He’s expressed his interest in Luke Cage, one of Marvel’s lesser-known heroes, before. Luke Cage is a man who was convicted for a crime he didn’t commit, and was given superpowers while he was in prison. Cage’s skin became harder than diamond and his strength was amplified to superhuman levels. One of the things that made the character unique was that he originally styled himself as being a Hero for Hire. He would only take cases if his employers could pay his fee, but he often ended up giving back the money. Cage eventually joined the Avengers and he’s become an important member of the team for most of the last decade.

Kevin Feige recently praised Johnson and said that he would love to see him join the Marvel Universe at some point. Johnson personally responded on Twitter to thank Feige for his kind remarks, and started the hashtag #RockAsCage to drum up support.

Marvel has been trying to get a Luke Cage movie made for years, but it’s been struggling in development hell. Back in the 90’s, Quentin Tarantino was offered the chance to direct the film, but instead chose to make Pulp Fiction. The original plans were for the film to be rated “R,” but that may have changed since the Avengers franchise took off.

Sever actors have expressed interest in playing Cage, including Quentin “Rampage” Jackson and Johnson’s own Fast & Furious co-star Tyrese Gibson. In my opinion, Johnson is the best option yet. It’s unknown if Marvel has any plans to introduce Cage into their universe, but if The Rock himself is ready and willing to bring him to life, that might make the character move up their priority list.

What do you think  of the idea of Johnson playing Luke Cage? Do you think that he would be a good choice for the role? Why don’t you just tell us what you think in the comments below?
