In slightly surprising news, Deadline broke an exclusive today that James Wan is Universal’s choice at replacing Justin Lin as the Fast and Furious 7 director. Lin has directed every movie since Tokyo Drift and took the series from the brink of death to a glorious resurrection with Fast Five. Replacing him won’t be easy, and I don’t know if James Wan is the man for the job.
James Wan is a very good filmmaker but he specializes in making very successful, very low budget horror movies. He started with Saw and then helped break the box office with Insidious. Next up is another low budget horror movie in The Conjuring.
Now, I’m not saying he should never get the chance at a big budget action movie, but he has never made one and Fast and Furious 7 is a movie that is riding very high. If Wan turns out to not have the chops for high octane action, the entire franchise could screech to a halt.
Has James Wan done enough to sell you on him as the Fast and Furious 7 director? Let us know below.
