Bryan Singer loves to use social media to keep close to his fans and also prefers to break news himself using it, instead of just leaking it to the media. His latest news involves the X-Men: Apocalypse casting, where he went to Instagram and announced that he has case Kodi Smit-McPhee to play Nightcrawler in the next X-Men movie.
First of all, it is so very cool to see Nightcrawler back in the X-Men movies. He was one of the best things about the very good X2 and was missed tremendously in X-Men: The Last Stand. Honestly, Alan Cumming was perfect as Kurt Wagner, although it might be nice to see a little more of his playful attitude in the new X-Men movie instead of just the angst.
This is pretty great casting news, as Smit-McPhee is a fantastic young actor. His biggest breakout came in the dark apocalyptic movie The Road, but I really loved him in the American version of the vampire tale Let Me In. Of course, his last big movie was Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, where he played Alexander. The kid is really starting to break out.
One little side note here, Nightcrawler died in the Marvel Comics universe and was eventually brought back by a Nightcrawler from the Age of Apocalypse alternate reality. With the X-Men universe implementing the alternate worlds, one has to wonder what Singer has planned for the “Fuzzy Elf.”
X-Men: Apocalypse, as the title suggests, brings the villain Apocalypse to the X-Men movie world, one of the oldest and most powerful mutants who has no goal less than world domination. Xavier, Magneto and Mystique return to team with young mutants Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Nightcrawler and more to battle the evil mutant.
X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27, 2016.
