The Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer hit last week and showed that the next movie in the franchise might be a lot less lighthearted than the first (which people seem to forget had some pretty intense moments among the humor). It also looks like the movie may end up severing the Avengers team and setting them up on opposite sides of the spectrum.
That was made kind of clear when the next Captain America movie was titled Captain America: Civil War (see the entire Marvel Phase 3 schedule here) and word is that Iron Man will be an antagonist in that film. The idea is that Tony Stark building Ultron, and that robot almost destroying the world, will splinter the team, maybe leaving Stark all by himself.
However, there are also rumors that Steve Rogers will look to take leadership himself. Here is what Chris Evans had to say about his character:
“He’s still looking for a home, probably a metaphorical home. He’s always felt comfortable as a soldier. And he likes structure. He works well taking orders. But when that dynamic turned on him, he’s now left to depend upon his team, the Avengers. There really is no one above them telling them what to do. They’re kind of having to operate independently. So there’s a lot of leaning on one another, but there really isn’t a kind of clear chain of command. And I think Cap looks for that. I think he’s looking to understand where he belongs, not just as a soldier, as Captain America, but as Steve Rogers, as a person.”
Steve Rogers and Tony Stark butted heads in the first movie and that should continue, especially with Stark claiming that he set The Avengers on a road to the end. Stark has never been a team player, so expect the Civil War to be different than the one in the comics. Also expect the Avengers to be a completely different team in Avengers: Infinity War Part 1.
Word is that Steve Rogers will leave The Avengers and form his own team, which will appear in Captain America: Civil War. Expect his S.H.I.E.L.D. allies Black Widow, Hawkeye and Maria Hill to join him, along with The Falcon. Expect Winter Soldier to be there as well, although whose side he is on is yet to be determined.
Then, in Avengers: Infinity War Part 1, expect Iron Man to have his new team, which might include Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Vision and maybe War Machine to tackle the attacking Thanos and then everyone finally joins forces for the final battle in Avengers: Infinity War Part 2, which is said to end the current Marvel Cinematic Universe story.
