One week after Guardians of the Galaxy opened with the biggest ever August weekend box office total, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opened huge as well, ranking fourth all-time for August movie openings. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles captured the weekend box office crown with an impressive $65 million.

While Guardians of the Galaxy fell 56 percent in its second weekend, it still made an impressive $41.5 million, which is the biggest second weekend for any movie released this summer. The drop is about the same as that of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and since the reviews and word-of-mouth for Guardians of the Galaxy is better than that of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, expect the Marvel movie to pass it again next weekend.

Thanks to these two movies, this August might be the biggest August ever for the box office and has a chance to hit $1 billion, pulling the summer up from the low expectations as too many movies failed to impress.

There were three other new releases for this weekend box office report. Into the Storm ranked third, The Hundred-Foot Journey finished in fourth and Step Up All In opened at sixth.
