A couple of days ago, it was reported that Shane Black (Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) had been hired to write and direct a reboot for Predator.  This was quickly debunked by Black himself who clarified that he was actually making an “inventive Predator sequel.”

The reception of Black’s hiring will likely be mixed after the release of Iron Man 3, but this feels like a good fit.  Say what you will about Iron Man 3 but the action was a great improvement over the first two films and far more ambitious.  While he probably won’t be able to insert as much humor as he normally does with his films, it’s a fairly safe bet that he will still find a way to make the film enjoyable. Also, Black already has some experience with Predator.  Granted, he is mostly known in the franchise as one of Schwarzenegger’s doomed soldiers but he also served as an uncredited writer to the original film.

What Black didn’t mention though is what the film would be a sequel to.  Does this mean he’s going to pick the series up where 2010’s Predators left off or will he take the Bryan Singer route and retcon the sequels that nobody likes (which in general is everything after the first movie)?
