The Despicable Me franchise exploded from out of nowhere with a fantastic debut movie and an above average follow up. With the third movie in the series, focusing on the Minions, coming next year, the future looks bright for the Illumination property. The Despicable Me 2 Blu-ray got some more great news today, as the second movie in the series became the best selling opening week animated Blu-ray of all time with a huge $80 million take.
This is added to the $367 million that Despicable Me 2 made at the domestic box office ($918 million worldwide). In comparison, Sony’s 2013 animated release Epic made a TOTAL of $107 million at the box office and has only sold $11 million worth of Blu-rays since its release. That should tell you all you need to know about how Despicable Me has connected with viewers.
According to the press release sent out today, the movie also broke the record for first week digital sales. The sales for the first week totaled out to be about 4.5 million units spread across Despicable Me 2 Blu-ray, DVD and digital copies. This is the best selling animated movie since the first Despicable Me. According to the studio, Despicable Me 2 is also on pace to become the best selling digital title of all time.
