Paramount has been searching for someone to direct the World War Z sequel for the last couple of months after unceremoniously parting ways with Marc Forster. However, it now appears that their search is finally over. Juan Antonio Bayona (The Impossible, The Orphanage) has been hired to direct to the still to be titled World War Z 2. It should be noted however, that the sequel is in the relatively early planning stages and is still searching for a writer so the sequel is likely going to be at least another two years away.
While I’ll admit I prefer the World War Z book, I actually enjoyed the movie despite some flaws. I don’t know that much about Bayona but I’m hopeful that he can avoid the same problems Forster had to deal with in the first movie and make the sequel that much better. He already has experience in making a creepy setting with his work in The Orphanage and he has certainly proven he knows how to give a movie some emotional stakes with The Impossible (elements fairly lacking in World War Z).
Is Juan Antonio Bayona a good choice to direct? Is a World War Z sequel necessary? Let us know in the comment section below.
