The Godzilla trailer has roared onto the Internet and does the smartest thing possible – it barely shows more than a cloudy glimpse of the giant lizard monster. Check out the trailer above and come back for our thoughts on the rebooted monster movie.
Godzilla has a long history. There are the brilliant original movies, which includes sequels that have a number of fan favorite monster villains that Godzilla has to fight. However, at the end of the day, Godzilla is a monster born out of the fears of war and – originally – created in response to the Atomic Bomb that killed over 200,000 people at the end of World War II.
The Godzilla story has been rebooted before by Roland Emmerich with very lackluster effects. Emmerich has always been more interested in destroying cities and less interested in developing his stories, and it showed with Godzilla.
However, this time around, we have Gareth Edwards at the helm, a director who turned heads with his very interesting, and very good, Monsters. In that movie, he used very little money to create a great monster movie with a good story and monster CG effects he created himself. The first thought is that, if he could do something that great with no money, what could he do with a big budget?
We now get to find out, and from the look of the first Godzilla trailer, we should be in for a treat.
