There will be an Addams Family reboot! Hurrah cheer the fans of macabre family comedy! For those of you who still remember the bygone era when Tim Burton was signed on to create a stop motion version, I’m sorry to disappoint, but that is not what I’m talking about. No, this is an entirely new project brought to you by the folks at MGM. Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun will be bringing an animated Addams Family to the big screen. Word on the street is that Pamela Pettler will be penning the script for this most excellent idea.
Now, I’m not a huge fan of the cascade of reboots we’ve all been drowning in. A lot of these properties have been done well so many times that further iterations seem like straight up overkill. In this case, however, I feel the opposite. The first reason in obvious. They’re doing an animated version. So many gags that are impossible in live action are suddenly on the table. As awesome as seeing someone stumble around dressed as Cousin It would be, the plausibility of the character will be enhanced a thousand times by animation (the same goes for the sentient hand).
I grew up on animated Addams Family, so I can’t help but be excited. Beyond that, we’re seeing a boom in horror right now. There is a huge quantity of incredibly talented filmmakers working in the genre these days. Bringing a cultural touchstone like the Addamses back seems like it would fit right in with the regained popularity of horror movies. That means we can teach more kids about how sweet spooky stuff is. Plus, maybe we’ll get to see Danny Devito as Uncle Fester
