Hugh Jackman recently confirmed that he has signed on for a supporting role in Neill Blomkamp’s next science fiction film, Chappie. The film centers around a robotic police officer who is kidnapped by street hoodlums. The robotic lead character will be voiced by Sharlto Copley and the street hoodlums will be played by Die Antwoord’s Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er.

Jackman announced both the casting and where the film will be produced in an interview with Screen Daily.

“I am doing a role in Neill’s new film, called Chappie, which we shoot in Johannesburg. I’m there for a couple of weeks at the beginning of next year.”

It’s rumored that Jackman will be playing a CEO who has some history with the hoodlums who kidnap the android police officer, but there has yet to be an official announcement. Another rumor stated that Dev Patel was in the running for the human lead, but it’s not currently known if any agreement was reached.

Chappie is based on one of Blomkamp’s old short films, and both he and Terri Tatchell co-wrote the new script. Sony has scheduled Chappie for an early release next year, debuting on March 27, 2014.
