Recently, Jesse wrote up an article about Stephen King dismissing Twilight as “tweenager porn” and he also made some backhanded comments towards the Hunger Games franchise as well. I realized that King had only read the first book in the series and did not go on, so it is natural that he didn’t see what was coming was more than just the Battle Royale rip-off.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire comes out this winter and this is where the story really starts moving, as the games themselves lead to the uprising and rebellion from the poor and  disenfranchised who have been held down and punished for long enough.

The face behind this uprising is a figure who sees herself as taking over the role of president that Donald Sutherland holds so firmly. That character is President Alma Coin, and she might be just as evil as Sutherland’s President Snow. The Julianne Moore Hunger Games casting tells me that they just chose the perfect person to play this conflicted, and complicated, character.

Moore will play Coin in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire as well as the two-part The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. It is kind of ironic since Moore also won a Golden Globes award for playing Sarah Palin, a woman who really wanted to be president one day as well. Luckily, Moore is the one who finally gets to play the role instead.

The fact that they announced this casting now, since The Hunger Games: Catching Fire comes out in two months, is strange timing. Did they cast her a long time ago but not announce it until now or are they adding her scenes in at the last minute? President Coin plays a much larger role in the Mockingjay book, so she just might be a small cameo in this one, but we will have to wait and see.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens in regular and IMAX theaters on Nov. 22, 2013.
