It’s funny how fans can shoot themselves in the foot sometimes. Especially, when it comes to needing updates immediately, when they cannot have the patience to save their own lives. We’ve seen this in the past when it comes to significant news events or even major spoilers for films like The Dark Knight Rises.
When Vin Diesel Marvel collaboration announcements started hitting the web, the same event took place. Fans wanted information and they wanted it right away. According to Diesel himself, that may have killed a potential fresh property that was being set up between Diesel and Marvel for Phase 3.
Here is the statement from Diesel:
What we were initially talking about was a fresh IP [intellectual property], and that was the focus of our conversation — a fresh IP that would come out in 2016 or 2017 and potentially launch the third phase.
The actor then says that they then went to Comic-Con and realized the fans were not ready to wait that long. Which then led to discussions of Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy.
With my schedule, it was almost impossible to imagine I could do anything immediate. I guess after they watched Iron Giant, or whatever, they came up with this idea of taking the strangest Marvel character — or the strangest Marvel character that’s ever hit film — and thought what I could do with that with motion capture and with my voice. Now it’s just up to my reps to allow that to happen.
The question remains what fresh “intellectual property” did Marvel have in mind to set up with Diesel? And will the overwhelming need for immediate satisfaction from the fanbase kill it off completely now that Diesel is considering Groot?
Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on August 1st!
