When Rupert Wyatt left the Planet of the Apes sequel, I was kind of worried about the franchise. I mean, Rise of the Planet of the Apes was pretty great and I really wondered if they were going to keep the quality up with a new director coming aboard. I had nothing to worry about because I have complete faith in his replacement, Matt Reeves. Now, news comes that Gary Oldman has signed on to come aboard the sequel and I am completely sold.
Gary Oldman can make anything better.
I have to think that Oldman is pretty set in mainstream pop culture now. With his face appearing in the Dark Knight franchise, Harry Potter franchise, and now the Planet of the Apes franchise, he is nearing Hugo Weaving levels of notoriety. Hell, with Gary Oldman coming aboard, I won’t be too disappointed if James Franco dies off-screen in between the two flicks. I mean, he was supposed to die anyway in the first movie.
Oldman joins Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In) as new members of the suddenly impressive cast for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Oldman will portray the leader of the human resistance and will be the main rival to the smart ape Caesar. The movie takes place 15 years after the ape uprising.
Now, if these big franchise roles can help Gary Oldman make a sequel to Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, it will all be worth it in the end.
