Glenn Close, actress extraordinaire, who I don’t think has ever phoned a role in, in her life (remember this, it’ll be important later), is slated to play the head of the Nova Corps in Guardians of the Galaxy. As Nova Prime or Nova One or whatever they’ll be referring to her character as, Close assumed fictional onscreen control of a space militia/explorer outfit. Should be a nice, juicy role for her to sink her chops into, right?
But wait! According to recent comments, some may choose to believe that she’s not in it for any semblance of artistic integrity; in fact, based on the following quote, a lot of people are probably moaning that she’s only in it for that sweet, sweet green. When asked about her participation in Guardians, Close has this to say:
“I’m doing that because it will then afford me to go do the other kind of movies that I really love. And hopefully I will have a great time. It’ll be a new experience for me, but practically speaking it will mean that I can do those smaller movies and it’ll be okay.”
I’ve already seen people on the web blowing these comments a little out of proportion. “She’s all about the money!” they scream. That’s only really half the point though. She what she says she’s going to do after the paycheck clears her account? She’s going to make smaller films. Every other time an actor or director does this, they are lauded for their decision. Hell, it’s been lampooned since the days of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. And I quote: “What’ve I been telling you? You gotta do the safe picture. Then you can do the art picture. ” (“But then sometimes you gotta do the payback picture because your friend says you owe him.” Sorry, love that line, had to include it.)
In essence, a lot of folks in Hollywood do the big picture so they can do the small picture. Or they do the money pic so they get the cash to do an original big budget film of their own. This is not a problem in the slightest. And as I said up top, I’ve never seen Glenn Close just phone it in. Not on the big screen as a sadistic, obsessed mistress. Not on the small screen on an up and coming cable network. I certainly don’t think she’ll start doing so here; she’s probably going to “have fun” with Guardians and knock it out of the park because that’s the kind of worker and talent she is. So, to my fellow geeks everywhere, I implore you: chill out.
