Ever since Joaquin Phoenix backed out of playing Doctor Strange a couple of weeks ago, there have been many rumors and suggestions from fans as to who will and should replace him. The latest one to come through earlier today was for none other than Obi Wan Kenobi himself, Ewan McGregor.
Admittedly, I was a little surprised by this rumor at first but after thinking about it for a couple of minutes I actually found myself liking the idea and this would be a fairly sensible move for Marvel compared to the other rumored actors.
Let’s take a look at some of the others that have been rumored for the part over the last few months. Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy, while probably more ideal choices to appease fan-boys, are not particularly realistic. Both actors have had some pretty busy schedules over the last couple of years with no signs of either of them slowing down, especially Cumberbatch. Then there’s Ethan Hawke, who while a fantastic actor just doesn’t strike me as the right choice for the role. As for Keanu Reeves, the less said about that one the better.
Ewan McGregor on the other hand actually feels like a pretty nice fit not just for the role but for a Marvel movie. Marvel has a track record of hiring well established and respected actors but none of them have been big enough stars to warrant a giant paycheck (or at least not at first). McGregor is also experienced with working in franchises with the Star Wars prequel being the obvious example. While that series as a whole is undoubtedly mediocre at best, McGregor was also the best part of that series. Even in the presence of Jar Jar Binks, Hayden Christensen, Jake Lloyd, a CGI Yoda, boring dialogue, and many more problems that I won’t get into in this article, McGregor managed to keep his dignity and with the exception of Ian McDiarmid in Episode III, out-acted the rest of the cast blindfolded.
Do you think McGregor would make a good Doctor Strange? Who do you prefer to play the character? Give us your thoughts in the comment section below.
